time and part-time cleaning staff working round the clock to keep the Grand Mosque spotless during the holy month of Ramadan. •The mammoth task is assisted by the use of over 300 cleaning machines to confront a daily 40 tons of garbage collected from the Grand Mosque, says Hamoud Al-Obadah, head of Cleaning and Furnishing at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques. “This will increase during the last 10 days of the holy month to 187 tons per night,” Al-Obadah said. He appealed to pilgrims and worshippers to help maintain cleanliness by using waste disposal units, refrain from bringing food and drink into the mosque other than limited quantities of dates, coffee and Zamzam water, and refrain from using Zamzam water taps for prayer ablution. “The Zamzam water taps are for drinking,” Al-Obadah said. “Using them for ablution is a waste of water and is a hazard causing people to on the wet floor.”
