General hosted a gathering for the Thai community in the western region of Saudi Arabia in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand on her 77th birthday. The celebration was held at the Consul-General's residence here on Thursday. Praphat Chantaharn, Consul-General of Thailand in Jeddah, offered best wishes to Queen Sirikit on behalf of the Thai community, saying “Long Live Her Majesty the Queen”. August 12th each year is a very special day for the people of Thailand. It is the Queen's birthday, and in recognition of her contributions to the nation, it is a national holiday which is recognized throughout Thailand as Mother's Day. For almost 60 years Her Majesty Queen Sirikit has worked side by side with His Majesty the King for the good of the people of Thailand. Throughout the years, Queen Sirikit has undertaken many development projects. She has been a constant motivation, support and inspiration to those less privileged who look to the Royal Family of Thailand for example, guidance and fulfillment. Her Majesty has been especially interested in women's self-help programs in rural Thailand. She has directed funds to worthy projects helping village women start businesses for weaving, candle making, herbal medicines, fabric dying and other ventures that can bring gainful employment and remuneration to rural villages. In instances where government funds have not been available, the Queen has dipped into her own royal budget to provide projects with “start-up” funds. As a result of her care and compassion, it is truthful to say that Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is deeply loved and admired by her subjects and on Aug. 12 each year the people of Thailand pay tribute to her as Mother of the Land. __
