Brett Tomko pitched five scoreless innings to beat New York less than a month after being released by the Yankees, winning his debut with the Oakland Athletics 3-0 in the American League Monday. Kurt Suzuki and Mark Ellis had RBI hits in a three-run fourth inning against A.J. Burnett (10-6) in the Yankees' second straight loss on this West Coast trip. Three relievers finished the shutout, the fourth this season against the Yankees, who lead the majors in home runs and are second to the Los Angeles Angels in runs scored. Tomko (2-2) allowed five hits and one walk, throwing 78 pitches in his first start May 26, 2008, for Kansas City. Tomko started the season in the Yankees' organization and was called up to the majors in May. He went 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 15 relief appearances before being designated for assignment on July 21. The A's signed him to a minor league deal earlier this month and he made three appearances in the minors before getting the start against his former team. Andrew Bailey pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save, finishing Oakland's sixth shutout of the season. Angels 8, Orioles 5: At Baltimore, Vladimir Guerrero hit two homers and had five RBIs, and Kendry Morales and Maicer Izturis also homered as Los Angeles downed Baltimore. The Angels broke a 2-all tie with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. Izturis broke the tie with a solo shot off rookie David Hernandez (4-5) in the sixth. Guerrero added a two-run drive. In the seventh, Guerrero hit a three-run homer, his 10th of the season and 402nd for his career. He has 38 career multihomer games. Ervin Santana (6-6) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings to win his third straight start. Brian Fuentes got the final out for his 34th save. The Angels have won six of seven overall and 20 of their last 26 on the road. Rangers 8, Twins 5: At Arlington, Texas, Marlon Byrd drove in three runs as Texas beat Minnesota to extend its lead in the AL wild-card race. White Sox 8, Royals 7: At Chicago, Scott Podsednik had a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer in the seventh as Chicago edged Kansas City. Cards down Dodgers Rick Ankiel put St. Louis ahead with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, and Chris Carpenter allowed five hits over eight innings in the St. Louis Cardinals' ninth victory in 10 games, 3-2 over Los Angeles in the National League on Monday. Albert Pujols hit his major league-leading 39th homer as the Cardinals opened a seven-game California trip. Carpenter (13-3) fell behind twice, but Pujols and Ankiel connected to ensure his fifth consecutive victory. He is 8-0 in nine starts since July began, and 5-0 in six career starts against the Dodgers. James Loney had an RBI single in the fifth for the Dodgers, who opened a tough seven-game homestand with their fourth loss in five games. Ankiel homered after knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (0-1) hit Ryan Ludwick with a pitch. Ankiel was in a 1-for-17 slump before his ninth homer of the season. In other NL games it was: Padres 4, Cubs 1; Braves 9, Diamondbacks 4; Giants 10, Mets 1; Pirates 9, Brewers 5.
