Matsui, Posada lift Yankees
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 13 - 08 - 2009

Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada hit consecutive homers leading off the eighth inning for the New York Yankees to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 and their eighth win in nine games on Tuesday.
Matsui hit Jesse Carlson (1-5) deep to right to tie it at 4 and Posada followed with an opposite-field drive that just got over the glove of leaping right fielder Joe Inglett and survived a video review. Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon added RBI singles off Josh Roenicke to make it 7-4.
New York has hit consecutive homers in three straight games for the first time since 1983 and has gone back-to-back 13 times this season.
Indians 5, Rangers 0: At Cleveland, Aaron Laffey pitched effectively into the seventh inning to remain undefeated at home for Cleveland. Laffey (6-3) allowed six hits and three walks in 6 2-3 innings. He is 4-0 with a 1.59 ERA in five home starts.
Orioles 3, Athletics 2: At Baltimore, David Hernandez outpitched Trevor Cahill in a duel between rookies as Baltimore ended a nine-game losing streak against Oakland since July 2007.
Brian Roberts had three hits, an RBI and two stolen bases for the Orioles, who had been outscored 30-6 in their previous four games against Oakland this season.
Red Sox 7, Tigers 5: At Boston, Mike Lowell, who entered the game after Kevin Youkilis was ejected for charging the mound and inciting a bench-clearing scuffle, hit two home runs to lead Boston past Detroit.
Other results: Royals 14, Twins 6; Angels 6, Rays 0; White Sox 3, Mariners 1.
Dodgers crush Giants
Manny Ramirez hit a towering two-run homer and doubled in a run as the Los Angeles Dodgers routed their rival San Francisco Giants 9-1 in the National League on Tuesday.
Andre Ethier doubled twice and drove in two runs for the NL-leading Dodgers, who increased their West division lead over the Giants to 7-1/2 games. Ramirez's homer in the seventh was his seventh since returning from a 50-game doping suspension.
Phillies 4, Cubs 3, 12 innings: In Chicago, Ben Francisco led off the 12th inning with a home run to give Philadelphia a remarkable win over Chicago despite getting only three hits all game.
The Phillies remained 3-1/2 games ahead of Florida atop the NL East. The Cubs have lost five of six and remain three games off the pace in the NL Central.
Marlins 9, Astros 8, 11 innings: In Miami, Dan Uggla hit a game-ending RBI single with the two outs and the bases loaded in the 11th inning, as Florida edged Houston and won its fifth straight.
Other results: Reds 5, Cardinals 4; Pirates 7, Rockies 3; Diamondbacks 6, Mets 2; Padres 13, Brewers 6; Braves 8.
