A team of Saudi and US archeologists have started excavations at a historical site in the town of Jarash in Asir that dates back to pre-Islamic times. The team, which began its work a few days ago and is expected to continue for a month, is using probing equipment to explore the site which reportedly includes rocks similar in size to those used in the construction of the Giza pyramids in Egypt. The team of archeologists, according to historian Mohammed Aal Zulfa, initially visited the site in the Ahad Rufeidah region last summer, and were sufficiently encouraged by their findings to return for more extensive excavations. “There is evidence of a main town center under the largest hill with large rocks displaying signs of an advanced form of architecture,” Aal Zulfa said. “At another location there are what would appear to be the foundations of a collapsed mosque, and the team is looking into the factors that may have led to that.”
