The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has said that it will not remain inert in the face of the marriage of minors and unions threatened by claims of tribal incompatibility. Zayed Aal Hussein, vice president of the HRC, said that the group's position was steadfast on the issues. “The HRC is carefully studying the issues with the help of Shariah scholars and the Ministry of Justice within a range of concepts related to human rights,” Aal Hussein said. “The Ministry of Justice is drawing up a new law to codify the marriage of minors,” he added. The HRC, Aal Hussein said, had asked the Ministry of Health for data on the effects of child marriage and had itself produced a report on its physical and psychological damage, and its compatibility with the Shariah principle which stipulates that “harm be addressed before benefits are considered.”
