The United States continued its strong defense of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a late 2-0 victory over Honduras in their group match on Wednesday. Santino Quaranta scored with a powerful strike in the 73rd minute and Brian Ching blew the match open with a header in the 79th as the US secured top place in Group B on six points. Underdog Honduras survived early scoring opportunities but United States substitutes Benny Feilhaber and speedy Charlie Davies helped turn the match in the second half. Both players figured in their team's opening goal, Feilhaber sending a ball into the box where Davies laid it off for Quaranta to score. Six minutes later, Steve Cherundolo sent a perfectly placed ball in the box for Ching to finish over the top of two Honduras defenders and ensure the United States remains undefeated in Gold Cup pool play. After hammering Grenada 4-0 over the weekend, the Americans lead Honduras and Haiti on three points, and can clinch a quarter final berth with a draw against the latter in their remaining group match on Saturday. In the other match Fabrice Noel scored in the 14th minute and James Marcelin added another in the 78th for Haiti to beat Grenada 2-0. The win was Haiti's first in the Gold Cup since 2002. Haiti is 1-1 in Group B going into Saturday's game against the US. Grenada is the group's lone winless team going into Saturday's game against Honduras, also in Foxborough. Noel deflected in a free kick by Brunel Fucien. Marcelin took a pass from Raymond Ednerson, beat a defender at the top of the penalty area, and converted his one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Desmond Noel. One of Grenada's best scoring chances came in the 39th when Delroy Facey took a cross and had a wide-open shot on the left side of the net, but put the ball over the crossbar.
