or graphic art as it is more popularly known - is a direct expression of our world in terms of its activities and needs in communication. It is highly unique and distinctive form of art, which requires an understanding of the elements of structure, color and space. It also provides and produces clear images of directions and trends. “In my personal study of commercial art I have learned specifically about techniques and skills,” stated graphic artist Renad Al-Sekait, in an interview with Saudi Gazette at her studio in Riyadh. “There is a great need presently in the Kingdom for commercial art, particularly in the interior design field.” Al-Sekait works at Prince Sultan University in Riyadh in the Interior Design department and focuses on developing creative and innovative ideas for homes, offices and other commercial venues. Her special interest lies in all aspects of the use of color and shades within the interior design field, and she emphasizes the importance of color and its ability to expres a variety of moods and settings. Al-Sekait remarks that she does not fall into any one school of art. “All my work is influenced by Bauhous, Cubism and Expressionism, and they have formed the foundation of my work both in graphic and interior design,” she stated. Technology also features within her work, with her focus in two fields requiring specific technical expertise and the use of up-to-date technology. Indeed, much of graphic and interior design work these days relies heavily on the use of computer software. The fields require creativity, but not the kind relating to the field of fine arts, such as painting, drawing and sculpture. In these fields, the artist must consider perspectives and space in a more forthright manner. Al-Sekait adds that her function as an artist in this field is to create artistic solutions, and whether she designs for an apartment, an office, hospital or school, each project requires full awareness of the purpose and ultimate goal.
