Faisal, Emir of Makkah Region, on Saturday inaugurated the executive works of the King Abdul Aziz Road project in Makkah. The project, located in southern Makkah, starts from the entrance to the holy city and ends at Jabl Omar adjacent to the Grand Mosque. It will cover seven old districts of the city. The project, to be completed in three years, is a giant step, said Prince Khaled. “This project is the best example of cooperation between the public and private sectors to bring development projects in the Kingdom to a decent level,” he said. Mohammad Qanawee, Director General of Umm Al-Qura Corporation which will supervise and develop the King Abul Aziz Road project, gave a presentation. The project, he explained, will have three phases divided into sub-phases. “There is a sequence in the procedures starting by announcing the real estate that will be dealt with in each phase, after which the residents will be given six months to leave their houses. Then the demolition work be done and the associated shifting of essential service lines will start,” he said. The project will be completed by the end of 2011, he added. Meanwhile, Prince Khaled, who is also Chairman of the Executive Committee for bringing about development in slum areas in the city, chaired the committee's 4th meeting. The Emir commended the efforts exerted by Security, Social and Technical Committees affiliated with the Executive Committee in implementation of the project according to the directives of the King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and his government in support of development and architectural development in the region as well as the provision of the best services to pilgrims and Umrah performers.
