The senior Indian advocate, Zafaryab Jilani, who is currently visiting Jeddah, is sure of winning the crucial Babri Masjid case, the arguments for which are in the final stage. Jilani, who is also the Convener of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, said that the case which has been dragging on since 1992, when the mosque in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh was demolished by 150,000 Hindu zealots, is coming to an end, and will be decided in favor of Muslims as they have produced enough evidence as opposed to the defendants who have till now been relying on faith and sentiments but have provided little evidence. The 465-year-old historic mosque was pulled down by Hindu militants claiming that the mosque was built by Mughal emperor Babar after destroying a temple, which was as they claimed the birthplace of Lord Rama, a Hindu deity. Jilani was speaking at a select gathering of intellectuals and litterateurs from the subcontinent. The event was organized by the Maulana Hifzur Rahman Seoharvi Academy – Jeddah. The advocate went into the details of the case and into the history of the mosque to elucidate his point that the case was coming to a logical end. Even if the Muslims win the case, it may further delay the handing over of the site to them as the temple body will in all probability take the case to the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in India. “We are not fighting for just a mosque,” Jilani said. “We are fighting against the injustice being perpetrated on us. If we had not stopped them here, they would have gone ahead with claims on more mosques,” he said. The case is currently before the Special Bench that was established by the Allahabad High Court in 1989, and this coming December, it will be 60 years since the title case of Babri Masjid was filed. Rauf Tahir, noted Urdu journalist, who presided over the meeting, said that the Babri Masjid issue is no longer an issue of Indian Muslims only; it is a matter concerning the whole Ummah, and hence “We should all pray for people like Zafaryab Jilani, who have been selflessly engaged in fighting the case in the court of law.”
