The Shariah Medical Committee in Taif has granted SR50,000 in blood money to a man who lost his wife due to a medical error during surgery at Taif Hospital. The bereaved husband has, however, called for severer punishments for the expatriate surgeon and further demanded that he be deported. According to the husband, members of the committee “strongly defended” the surgeon in a meeting on Sunday, and rejected suspending him for errors while performing a hernia operation on the woman. The surgical error reportedly led to the woman spending 72 days in a coma before she finally passed away.
