King checks on Iraqi, Moroccan twins
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 04 - 2008

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz on Tuesday inquired about the conditions of the Iraqi and Moroccan conjoined twins admitted in King Abdul Aziz Medical City at the National Guard in Riyadh.
King Abdullah had ordered the admission and separation of the two conjoined twins on the request of their parents. The surgical operations will be carried out at his expense.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabea, Executive Director of the National Guard's Health Affairs, said King Abdullah has acquainted himself with the results of the initial medical tests conducted to the two conjoined twins.
King Abdullah then directed the team to take care of the twins and provide him with a comprehensive report about their health condition on the completion of the medical checkups.
Rabea said the medical team would hold its first meeting in the few coming days.
The team, he added, has found that Iyad and Ziyad, the Iraqi Siamese twins, are conjoined at the lower part of the chest and abdomen. They also share one liver and one small intestine.
The team also found that one of the twins is suffering from a congenital deformity in the heart, with a hole in the two ventricles. Both of them weigh about four kilograms.
The analysis conducted on Safa and Marwa, the Moroccan twins, showed that they are also suffering from a congenital deformity in the heart, especially in the right and left ventricles, and narrowness in the pulmonary artery, and thus need to be given a diuretic.
They also share one liver and intestine and their abdominal wall is not fully developed.
Rabea expects the team to operate on the Iraqi twins before the Moroccans, because the Iraqi twins don't suffer from huge complications and are gaining more weight. – Okaz __
