A TEAM of Japanese karate experts held demonstrations and training sessions last week at the Asia Martial Arts Defense Club in Jeddah. A large number of Saudi karate coaches and others participated in the sessions that were organized by the Consulate General of Japan in Jeddah and the Saudi Arabian Karate Federation – Western Region. “The visit of top-class Japanese karate experts is in response to the enthusiasm shown for karate by a large number of Saudi nationals here, and also the efforts of the Federation to popularize this traditional Japanese martial arts form in the Kingdom,” said Toshimitsu Ishigure, the Japanese Consul General. He said the two countries share mutual interests in all fields, especially in cultural and sports activities, and that Japanese martial arts are very popular among the youths of both countries. Kesakatsu Kiyohara, who headed the visiting karate team, said that he was impressed by the Saudi youths' interest in martial arts and their performance. “I am happy to know that this Japanese sport is popular among Saudis here,” he said. Ali Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, general supervisor of the Saudi Karate Federation, Makkah and Al-Baha, said the visit will establish more cordial ties between the Kingdom and Japan. “We are happy to arrange this significant event and hope that it is able to develop the skills of our boys in martial arts.
