The Society of Petroleum Engineers Saudi Arabia Section convened here Sunday its 2009 technical symposium and exhibition with the special theme “Pushing the Technology for Higher Recovery.” Local, regional and international petroleum engineers are attending the three-day event, which will feature 16 technical sessions to be presented by experts. Dr. Ashraf Al-Tahimi, chairman of the symposium and exhibition, said the event hopes to promote the development and deployment of new technologies for enhanced and cost effective discovery and recovery of hydrocarbon reserves. The keynote speakers are Abdullatif Al-Othman, Saudi Aramco senior vice president of finance, Chad Deaton, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Baker Hughes, and Leo Roodhart, 2009 president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Abdullah Al-Naim, Saudi Aramco vice president of exploration, heads the panel six discussion speakers. Thirteen session speakers from Saudi Aramco, American universities, and oil drilling companies composed the invited speakers. Sixteen companies dealing in the oil and gas industry are taking part in the exhibition. Among the topics to be discussed and presented are drilling operations, reservoir geology, Nanotechnology in the oil and gas industry, and production enhancement and operations. The holding of the symposium and technical presentation coincides with the 50th year anniversary of the Saudi Arabian Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers which has over 3,000 members, mostly from Saudi Aramco.
