A Saudi has threatened to take the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to court if it fails to remove an electricity point from in front of his house and cease works that the man claims he has had to personally redress. Hasan Habib says that works in front of his home in the Madaen Al-Fahd District here obliged him to seek the help of his family and neighbors to fill in a large 12 sq. meter pit dug by SEC maintenance workers. “About 20 years ago, the electricity company set up a work point in front of my house on land that belongs to me. I agreed at the time to let them, despite the dangers, as it was for public works,” Habib said. “Two days ago, however, I was surprised to find the SEC digging another pit in preparation for a new electricity point. Its presence is hazardous and could be dangerous to my family and neighbors if a fire starts.” An SEC official said that the company complied with the strictest international safety standards in all its works, and that the continuous updating, maintenance works and installation of new points was conducted to meet the increasing demand. The official added that all the electricity points and generators were subject to computerized monitoring. Tariq Fad'aq, Chairman of the Municipal Council in Jeddah, said that the council had not received any complaint over the issue, but that if one were received he would look into it and coordinate with the authorities concerned.
