The Jeddah Mayoralty has filled in 65,000 street potholes amounting to a patching up operation of over 422,000 sq. meters of street surfacing in Hera and Makarona streets and neighboring areas up to the Al-Handasah roundabout. Faisal Shawli, Director General of Operations and Maintenance at Jeddah Mayoralty, said the work was completed over three days, with Makarona Street exhibiting the greatest damage in most urgent need of attention due to excavation works. Shawli said that during the first quarter of the current year maintenance teams had rectified 713 potholes on several streets amounting to a coverage area of 19,246 sq. meters in the districts of Al-Nuzha and Al-Bawadi 1. Work is set to continue in Al-Bawadi 2 and Al-Rabwah districts. The mayoralty has also put into place performance gauging measures to assess progress in digging work and the eradication of potholes and obtain feedback from residents of Jeddah. Jeddah Mayoralty monitors road surface holes and blemishes using GPS equipment, and new maintenance contracts worth SR42 million for the upkeep of thoroughfares over a three year period are scheduled to be awarded within 60 days at all municipalities.
