Colhoun presented a lecture under the title “Diabetes as a Vascular Disease”, highlighting the latest medical updates on the prevention of vascular diseases for diabetic patients; especially since vascular diseases in diabetics are the amongst the main causes of death in the Middle East. She said that there is significant data based on clinical studies on the method of using certain drugs, which contribute to lifting the levels of lipids in the blood for diabetic patients. These are specifically drugs with Estateen as a base, such as Lipitor, which focus intensely to limit the effects of vascular disease and help prevent the effects altogether. Diabetes is considered to be amongst the riskiest illnesses when associated with vascular disease, as statistics show that mortality rates caused by coronary atherosclerosis for diabetic women are between three to five times higher than those of non-diabetic women. In men, the mortality rate is two to three times more than those of healthy patients.
