Work to install lighting at a graveyard here has been stopped following a fatwa from a local cleric saying the action is unlawful. The local mayoralty had given the go-ahead for the installation of lighting at the Al-Mowaih graveyard to permit local residents to bury their dead during hours of darkness, but only got as far as the erection of lampposts before the fatwa was pronounced. A spokesman from the mayoralty said previous instructions from the Ministry of Rural and Municipal Affairs had also prevented lighting being provided at graveyards.
