day international conference on women's health issues under the theme “Successful Aging for Women” is being organized by King Abdulaziz University and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the patronage of Prince Khaled Al-Faisal Emir of Makkah Region. The conference, which is being attended by nearly 300 doctors from the Kingdom, GCC and Arab countries, Europe and the United States, was opened by Dr. Osama Tayyeb, President of King Abdulaziz University, at the InterContinental Hotel here on Tuesday. “I am sure this conference will bear fruitful results on the issue of women's health. We are very thankful to the Saudi authorities and to Prince Khaled Al-Faisal for organizing this conference, which will allow many important health issues to be discussed by international and national experts,” said Dr. Tayyeb. Dr. Hasan Nusrat, head of the organizing committee, said that the government paid great attention to the affairs of women, particularly their health and family affairs. Speakers representing WHO and local and international universities highlighted important issues related to women's health, such as, gender issues in health care, ageing in the Arab World, special needs of older women, origin of adult diseases, healthy aging, cardiovascular risks, risk factors and demographic data of the Saudi population, assisted reproduction and childhood cancer, and many other health related issues. Many developing countries have only recently begun addressing the problems of aging and in conservative societies, women's health issues are still not adequately addressed and are frequently neglected. “The idea of holding a conference on the successful aging of women is to raise awareness among women about the health issues involved in the aging process. Many women in the Middle East do not get regular exercise and follow eating habits which can make them vulnerable to disease. We need to find ways to educate them so that they can prevent themselves from getting sick,” said Dr. Adnan Al-Mazroa, Dean of the faculty of medicine, King Abdulaziz University.
