Prince Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Emir of Riyadh, has unveiled the next 5-year traffic plan for Riyadh while describing the previous plan as a “100 percent success” resulting in a reduction in accidents in the capital by 40 percent. The prince, who is Chairman of the Higher Committee for Traffic Safety, was speaking during a tour of the Riyadh Traffic Department Wednesday, during which he also warned against complacency. “The 5-year traffic plan has achieved a 100 percent success. The number of accidents fell by 40 percent despite the continuous increase in the number of vehicles. This does not mean we have reached perfection, but we have seen over the past five years a qualitative leap which every citizen should be proud of,” Prince Sattam said. “The first 5-year traffic plan produced good results that contributed in reducing the rate of deaths, injuries and traffic accidents, despite the large number of vehicles and an increase in circulation on the capital's roads,” Prince Sattam said. The Prince also made a visit Wednesday to the Riyadh Regional Traffic Department Command and Control Center, which has served to reduce response times to accident reports and improve contacts with other bodies such as the Red Crescent, Civil Defense and police. Prince Sattam was shown the traffic flow monitoring system for the capital's roads using Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), an integrated system based on the Global Positioning System (GPS), and the Operations Room accident mapping system which shows the position of mobile telephone callers on a digital map using GPS coordinates to pinpoint accident
