The transmission of electricity between Qatar and Saudi Arabia started on April 15 when the 400kv Doha South-Salwa (line 2) was commissioned. It is a part of the GCC Inter-Connection Grid (Phase 1), according to a Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) spokesperson. Describing the line linking Doha South and Salwa as a major milestone in GCC inter-connection grid (phase I), the Kahramaa official said the latest exchange of power from there is designed to connect Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar. The work also signalled the completion of the first phase of the inter-connection grid. The first phase alone has cost the participating GCC more than $1 billion. The actual power exchange within the GCC countries had started after the experimental operations of the sub-stations in the Interconnected Countries more than a month ago.
