Davydenko off to shaky start

seeded Nikolay Davydenko rallied to beat Ivo Minar 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 Wednesday in the second round of the clay-court Estoril Open.
Davydenko struggled with his serve in the first set and was broken twice, before recovering in the second with two breaks of his own.
Fifth-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon retired with back pains when trailing 6-2, 5-3 against Italian Flavio Cipolla.
Two other Frenchmen advanced, as seventh-seeded Marc Gicquel overcame compatriot Thierry Ascione 7-6 (2), 6-3, and Florent Serra knocked out Portugal's Rui Machado 7-6 (5), 6-1.
In the women's event, top-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta lost to Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-2.
Third-seeded Karin Knapp of Italy eliminated Mariana Duque Marino of Colombia, 6-3, 6-4, while sixth-seeded Klara Zakopalova beat Corinna Dentoni 6-4, 6-1. Eighth-seeded Camille Pin also advanced, beating Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-4.
Monaco downs Eschauer
Second-seeded Juan Monaco squeezed past Austria's Werner Eschauer 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 in the first round at the Valencia Open on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Tommy Robredo beat fellow Spaniard Santiago Ventura 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-4 to earn a quarterfinal against last year's runner-up and No. 8 seed Potito Starace of Italy. Starace defeated France's Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-1 on Wednesday.
In first-round matches, Fernando Verdasco defeated Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.Kunitsyn stuns Haas
Igor Kunitsyn Kunitsyn of Russia rallied from a set down to beat second-seeded Tommy Haas 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a first-round match at the US Clay Court Championship on Tuesday.
Earlier third-seeded Mardy Fish beat Germany's Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (4), 6-3.
The two other seeds in action also won, No. 5 Agustin Calleri of Argentina and No. 7 Marcel Granollers-Pujol of Spain.
Calleri beat Vince Spadea of the United States 6-4, 6-3 while Granollers-Pujol took only 50 minutes to rout Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-2, 6-0 without facing a break point.
Sergio Roitman of Argentina outlasted American John Isner 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 and will next play Kunitsyn.Cirstea upsets Chakvetadze
Romanian teen Sorana Cirstea upset third-seeded Anna Chakvetadze 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the last 16 at the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday.
Also through to the third round were No. 5 Serena Williams, No. 6 Marion Bartoli, No. 8 Dinara Safina and No. 10 Agnes Szavay.
Williams struggled past Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-3, 6-4, overcoming losing her serve three times.
Bartoli outlasted Casey Dellacqua of Australia 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, Safina defeated Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain, 6-1, 6-4, and Szavay beat Ai Sugiyama of Japan 7-5, 3-6, 6
