Kuwait seeks to import electricity from Qatar to cover looming power shortage for the coming two years, Minister of Electricity and Water Nabil Bin Salama said here Saturday. Speaking to reporters while inspecting the under-construction Al-Hamra Tower in downtown Kuwait City, the minister said he would meet his Qatari counterpart late this month to sign a relevant agreement. He expected that Kuwait could undergo a power shortage in 2010 due to increasing consumption at a time when under-construction power projects would not be completed. Importing power from Qatar is part of a general deal for Gulf power grid, which was inked by Kuwait in February, he said. Under the Gulf power grid agreement, power shall be transferred to any Gulf country that may experience electricity shortage, the minister noted. Asked about negotiations over importing Qatari gas, he said both sides were seeking to remove obstacles impeding an agreement in this respect. The 412 square meter Al-Hamra Tower is a unique skyscraper currently under construction in downtown Kuwait City, Kuwait. The 77-story tower will be completed by 2010. Once completed, it would be the tallest building in Kuwait.
