Unseeded American Sam Querrey captured his first career ATP title on Sunday, beating South African qualifier Kevin Anderson in three sets to win the $500,000 hardcourt tournament. Querrey, ranked 66th in the world, fired 12 aces en route to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 175th-ranked Anderson. Querrey, 20, bettered his match record to 12-6 this year and became the second American to capture an ATP title in 2008. The other is Andy Roddick, who won in San Jose last month and Dubai on Saturday. Querrey reached his first career final with a 7-5, 6-2 semifinal victory over Guillermo Canas of Argentina and Anderson ousted American Robby Ginepri, 7-6, (7-4), 6-4.“Rebels” relent to play but wants Paes removed Three of India's Davis Cup players have agreed to play under Leander Paes in the crucial tie against Japan, but they still want him out as captain for denting the team's spirit. Prakash Amritraj, Rohan Bopanna, Mahesh Bhupathi sent a letter to the All India Tennis Association (AITA) last month saying they had lost faith in Paes' captaincy. The rebels said on Monday they agreed to temporarily shelve their protest “in the best interest of Indian tennis”, although they stuck to their original demand to remove Paes. “With our only goal being to play for the country and with all other issues very much on the table, we look forward to playing Japan at home in April,” the players said in a statement. “And just to reiterate, our first letter to AITA stands.” The controversy erupted last month when Paes decided not to field Prakash for the opening singles in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group I first-round tie against Uzbekistan. Paes questioned Prakash's fitness and commitment, although the player said he was fit to play. Prakash, son of former India Davis Cup star Vijay Amritraj, eventually figured in the decisive reverse singles on the final day to script his team's 3-2 victory. The three players changed their mind and agreed to play in the Japan tie after reportedly being persuaded by Vijay Amritraj. “We all grew up with dreams of playing for the country. It (letter to the AITA) was done after a lot of thought and with a heavy heart,” the statement said. The AITA has supported Paes and retained the squad for the Japan tie. It also formed a two-man committee to look into the matter after receiving the letter, but said the final decision would be made after the Beijing Olympics. Paes and Bhupathi were also involved in a row before winning the doubles gold at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, saying they would never play together again. __
