N chief Nawaz Sharif has now put forward two more constitutional reform conditions - repeal of the 17th Amendment and implementation of the Charter of Democrac, the Dawn newspaper reported Thursday. “We're happy to give not only this but also another term to the PPP if it decides future of other judges and that of the 17th amendment in accordance with the CoD,' he told a press conference here on Wednesday. Repeal of 17th amendment, according to him, was part and parcel of the package decided with the PPP leadership. The constitutional amendment made during Musharraf's regime includes a clause that bars anyone from holding the offices of president, prime minister or chief minister more than twice. It was aimed at ousting Nawaz and slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, both twice elected prime ministers, from direct political activities. Asked if the judges who had earlier taken oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) could be made to show allegiance with the Constitution, he said the matter could be referred to the commission as enshrined in the CoD. Reinstated Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry had also taken oath under the PCO after the military coup by Gen Musharraf in 1999. Replying to a query about new appointments of judges, he said these should be on merit as enshrined in the CoD.
