Chat room
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 14 - 04 - 2008

It is believed, that most of those visiting chat rooms throughout the Middle East and, indeed elsewhere must be actors of sorts as they hide their true identity in order to impress or depress the listener on the other end.
Walking a slow walk around a chat room and eavesdropping on dialogues taking place… reveal…
“I love you!”, “Send money now”, “Will you marry me?”, “I lost my high paying job!”, “I broke my leg on the way to the chat room to talk to you…”, “Yes, I am a millionaire.” My mother is a terrorist …” …. My sister is the Queen”; “I have no money”. “I can only see with one eye and I limp on my left leg, because as a baby, my mother dropped me from a baby camel”.
It must be remembered that in this day and age people are stressed… do not know what they are saying, with a somewhat dubious future...'
It is fun for some Chat Room visitors to re-invent themselves and go into a broad range of directions which will in some way satisfy their secret desires.
A he, can become a she… A she can become a he and either one of them can play at ‘it'.
For some, mystery and intrigue… for others it is not clear. Let's look at claims made by some of the callers, and then let's compare them with true identities.
“I am the owner of a chain of beauty shops in the UAE,” says the caller to the person on the other end. In reality, he is a grave digger, “I am a leading solo singer with the Metropolitan Opera House in New York”. In reality he is a piano tuner of a local high school. “I am a poet and writer”. In reality, he is a librarian in a small town.
The mental stability of all of the visitors to the Chat Room is questioned by the non-participants. There are those that believe that the Chat Room is but a prologue of psychiatric help. That Chat Room trends are unfortunately found within marital relationships as well as in business negotiations and options.
The age of the average Chat Room visitor is between the very young teenager to the middle-aged and more matures. All are on a path of self-discovery, hopefully leading them to at least partial answers, answers of stabilization. The path is oftentimes filled with humor. Distorted humor which is spoken without warning.
The older gentlemen have no more time for self-delusions and illusions.
The users in a Chat Room invent themselves into the opposites of whom and what they are in reality in an effort to live a dream and or hidden fantasy … And by doing so; they are able to go into millions of possibilities which are available to the mind of the caller. It is all an amusing release which boggles the non-participant of this game of hear and hear it again in a different accent.
A telephone operator at an embassy becomes the prime Adviser to the Ambassador; a limousine driver becomes a government official representing England; a prominent surgeon becomes a meat cutter; a newspaper reporter becomes an insurgent; a zoo director becomes donkey at the San Diego Zoo in Long Beach, California; a cashier in a bank becomes a bank robber; a pilot becomes a Toys R Us salesman; an atheist becomes a Muslim… The Catholic is doomed to live several lives depending on how thin he can split his personality. At this point a few words must be said about the Mobile.
Chat and Mobile are different, but similar.
The Chat Room user knows not who he is talking to personally nor in any other way. The Mobile caller knows… One international opening line in the Mobile is, “What are you doing?”. The Chat Room user is oftentimes rude and vulgar and uses naughty-naught words and adjectives. The Chat Room user is evasive – the Mobile caller is normal and direct.
Listening is a skill which defines and ‘exposes' the caller for the good and or the bad. Careful… __
