– The Kuwaiti Cabinet resigned on Monday to derail lawmakers' attempts to question the prime minister in parliament. The Cabinet has quit several times before. The Kuwaiti Emir promptly accepted the resignations. Kuwait Television said Emir Sheikh Sabah A-Ahmed Al-Sabah asked the current Cabinet to stay on in caretaker capacity till another one is appointed. The Emir now has the choice to reappoint the outgoing prime minister, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, replace him or dissolve the parliament – a move that would lead to early elections. Kuwaiti leaders have dissolved the legislature five times since 1976, mostly to head off interrogations of Cabinet members or no-confidence votes. Five lawmakers were due to grill Sheikh Nasser on Tuesday about alleged misuse of funds, failure in running the country and the demolishing of a mosque built on state land. Many lawmakers claim the accusations are unfair. Kuwait's privately owned Alrai television reported that Nasser complained to the Emir that the demand for his questioning was an “exaggeration” and “misuse of constitutional tools.”
