Ram Chandra Katuwal, 52, may well be up for a Guinness record for a man who had most number of wives. He had as many as 27 “wives” in the past 26 years, but he claims he never engaged in “polygamy”. Of the women he took in as “wives”, 24 abandoned him or simply eloped with someone else, one he left himself and one died. He currently lives with his youngest wife, the 27th. Speaking to Nayapatrika Daily, Katuwal, who works as a porter in far-eastern hilly district of Sankhuwasabha, first married when he was a young lad of 25 years. The union only lasted for six months. Now fast forward to present, Katuwal doesn't even know the names of some of his past wives. But he is glad that his 27th marriage with Sharada Dahal has lasted for five years and is stable. “I never intended to have so many wives,” Katuwal told the Daily, “I kept on marrying and it just happened that without my knowing I had 27 wives.” When asked if he would marry again, Katuwal said, “The present one says she will never leave me. But if she does then I would have no choice. I can't live alone.” Has there been any proposals? “There has been, but I won't bring another while I am with my present wife.” Glynn Wolfe, a Baptist minister from California in USA, holds the record for the largest number of monogamous marriages at 29. He died in 1997.
