The Palmyra ruins are located in the Syrian Desert and span a full 6 square kilometers. They illustrate the magnificent history of Queen Zenobia's reign. The city still mostly stands to this day with the main market area stretching the length of the city, the amphitheater has been rebuilt where concerts are regularly held. A temple at the very end of the city, built by Babylonian settlers was reoccupied by Romans, then Islamic conquerors and then Turkish armies centuries later. Until the 1950's local tribesmen were living in the temple which still had four massive stone walls still erect even after centuries of reoccupation. __
