England's hopes of salvaging a series draw faded when it struggled to 80 for three on the fourth day of the fifth and final Test against West Indies in Trinidad on Monday. Earlier, West Indies was bowled out for 544, a first-innings deficit of two runs. Brendan Nash (109) hit his maiden Test century and Shivnarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 147 as the home team, 1-0 up in the series, again frustrated England. Given the situation in the series, England looked to play its shots and soon lost skipper Andrew Strauss for 14, caught and bowled by spinner Chris Gayle. Owais Shah was then caught behind off seamer Lionel Baker for one before Alastair Cook (24) fell in identical fashion to spinner Ryan Hinds shortly before the close. Chanderpaul carried his 21st Test century to a marathon, unbeaten 147 as he and Nash shared a record fifth-wicket stand of 234 that anchored the West Indies innings. The 34-year-old Chanderpaul, the reigning ICC Player of the Year, cracked 13 fours and a six off 361 balls in 522 minutes. The 31-year-old Nash, in his seventh Test, hit a fine 109 which spanned 257 balls and 329 minutes and was decorated with 17 fours. England took the last five West Indian wickets for 62 runs. Stuart Broad (3-67), Graeme Swann (3-130) and Monty Panesar (2-114) were the most successful England bowlers while James Anderson (1-70) deserved more reward for his efforts. Pakistan beats Sri Lanka Pakistan bounced back from the defeat to India by beating Sri Lanka in its second match at Canberra's Manuka Oval. Sri Lanka kept tabs on Pakistan after it elected to bat, restricting it to 161, but was rocked in its chase by new-ball bowler Qanita Jalil. Shashikala Siriwardene propped up Sri Lanka's chase with 58 but once she was dismissed the end was swift. It was Pakistan's first-ever victory over Sri Lanka in 19 ODIs and also its maiden win in the World Cup after six straight defeats. “There is always a first time and I am glad that we ended our win drought in the World Cup and also against Sri Lanka,” Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz said.
