A group of geologists from 17 countries are set to discuss on Monday the future of planet Earth at the eighth International Geology Assembly. The event, which will be opened by Prince Mish'al Bin Majed Bin Abdul Aziz, has been organized by the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS), in tandem with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, King Abdul Aziz University and the Saudi Society for Geosciences. SGS president Zuhair Bin Abdul Hafeeth Nawab said the scientists would discuss the development of groundwater resources, the Arabian-Nubian Shield – an exposure of Precambrian crystalline rocks on the flanks of the Red Sea – mineral waste management and environmental geology, sediment and petrol geology, earthquake and volcano hazards, mineral exploration, dynamic and structural geology and geographic information systems. Nawab said the meeting would look at the latest breakthroughs in the field, while presenting attendees with an opportunity to exchange expertise and information. The organizing committee will present facts related to the field from the Qur'an in a lecture to be presented by Zaghlool Al-Najjar. The four-day gathering hosts workshops, and field trips to the volcanic area of Raht in Madina and the maritime environment of Obhur Bay.
