The Directorate General of Health in Makkah is investigating a man's claim that doctors in a private hospital conducted a “phantom operation” on his wife. The woman last remembers being anesthetized in readiness for an operation, but when her severe pains continued later on she was taken to another hospital where doctors discovered that no surgery had been conducted, a matter which only served to make her condition worse. A spokesman from the Health Directorate said investigations were ongoing and that the case would be referred to the Shariah medical committee after the husband had demanded compensation for the physical and psychological damage caused to his wife.
