A medical team led by Professor Abdul Raheem Rozi from the Gynecology Deprtment and Professor Muhmoud Al-Ahwal from the Oncology Department of King Abdulaziz University Hospital here has successfully treated a pregnant woman in her 30s suffering from ovary cancer. Prof. Rozi said the patient, who was admitted to hospital while four months pregnant and diagnosed as suffering from a malignant tumor in her left ovary, refused an oophorectomy (removal of the ovary) in order to save the fetus. An oophorectomy, according to the professor, stops the synthesis of hormones from the ovaries in order to stop the progression of the cancer. He said that she was admitted to hospital suffering from a cyst explosion, necessitating a Cesarean Section to save her life. Prof. Rozi said the case was diagnosed as advanced ovary cancer and post operation doctors found that the fetus was suffering from severe congenital deformity. “We discussed the options with the mother and father but the mother insisted on continuing with the pregnancy to keep her baby alive. She was given radiation therapy and in the 34th week of her pregnancy she underwent a Cesarean Section during which the left ovary was removed. Five days after the operation the baby died due to severe congenital deformity.” “After completing the radiation therapy sessions prescribed to her, an MRI scan and post operation medical analyses revealed that there was no sign of tumor. The medical feat has been published in international medical journals,” Professor Rozi said.
