Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 02 - 2009

seeded Rafael Nadal will play Andy Murray in the ABN Amro finals after beating Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.
Nadal broke Monfils in the fifth game of the second set and, despite the Frenchman's 10 aces, went on to earn his first two-set win this week.
Second-seeded Briton Murray advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mario Ancic of Croatia earlier Saturday.
Despite nursing a minor injury to his right foot, Murray dispatched two-time ABN Amro champion Ancic in just over an hour.
Sania in final
Top seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia and India's unseeded Sania Mirza advanced to the final of the WTA's Pattaya Open in contrasting styles on Saturday.
Zvonareva raced through her semifinal against seventh-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel to win 6-1, 6-4 in just 61 minutes.
The Russian has now beaten Peer, the 2006 Pattaya champion, in all of their five matches.
Sania had a tougher time but overcame a blown opportunity for a straight sets victory to beat Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in her semifinal.
“I missed a couple of easy points and lost the second set. It happened,” said Sania, who was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set but faltered.
The No. 8-seeded Slovak fired shots to Sania's weak backhand and won the set when the Indian returned a backhand long.
Ranked 126th in the world as she works her way back from last year's long-term wrist injuries, the former world No. 27 Sania raced through the third set to reach her first final since Stanford in 2007.
Her only WTA-level singles title came at Hyderabad in 2005.
Mauresmo tops Jankovic
Local favorite Amelie Mauresmo reached the final of the Paris Open with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 victory over second seed Jelena Jankovic on Saturday.
The Frenchwoman, who won the tournament in 2001 and 2006, next faces Olympic champion Elena Dementieva after the third seed from Russia went through when Serena Williams pulled out injured.
“I played two sets well but I also had a sudden feeling of exhaustion,” said Mauresmo in a courtside interview.
“When I was 3-0 or 4-0 down in the second set I just let it go to have some strength for the third. In the first and third sets I was rigorous.”
World number one Williams withdrew from her match with a right knee injury and Dementieva had to make do with a practice session.
Roddick in semis
Top-seed Andy Roddick beat Tommy Haas 7-5, 6-4 to lead a trio of Americans into the semifinals of the San Jose Open on Friday.
The defending champion fired eight aces en route to the last four, where he was joined by compatriots James Blake and Mardy Fish.
Blake overcame an ankle injury to defeat fellow American Sam Querrey 7-6, 6-3 and set up a showdown with Fish, who eliminated second-seeded Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 6-4.
Qualifier Todd Widom's challenge was scotched by Czech fourth seed Radek Stepanek 5-7, 6-0, 6-0.Stepanek will next face Roddick.
