Five more Saudis have been arrested for their involvement in highway robberies. The gang was initially busted last week in Riyadh with the arrest of eight Saudis for carrying out 90 crimes in 17 areas in the Riyadh region.
Investigations revealed that the gang leader was operating from the General Prison where he is being held for an earlier case of kidnapping.
In a statement issued Friday on the results of investigations, Riyadh Region Police said the gang members' involvement in several armed highway robberies has been confirmed.
With their admission to the crimes they committed, the investigation is ended and the case will be referred to the court after completion of some procedures.
Riyadh Region Police said the gang was involved in numerous highway robberies, robbing traveler and Umrah pilgrims, trading in intoxicants and drugs, stealing trucks and small cars in several regions and governorates of the Kingdom including Riyadh, Al-Qassim, Halban, Tuha, Al-Quwai'iah, Al-Jallah, Marat, Al-Muzahimiah, Qussoor Al-Muqbil, Thadiq, Hotat Sudair, Al-Majma'ah, Shagra, Al-Thumamah, Mulhim, Huraimla and Al-Qassab. ther crimes perpetrated by the gang include attacking an Asian expatriate and robbing him.
Riyadh Police said the gang members showed no qualms even in robbing worshippers in mosques. They also attacked an Arab expatriate in a mosque and took away SR700, $1700 and 500 Egyptian pounds.
