Nadal survives teenage test

World number one Rafael Nadal needed three sets to beat Bulgarian teenager Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 on Thursday and reach the quarterfinals of the World Indoor Tournament.
Dimitrov conquered the hearts of the 9,000 spectators as he won the second set but in the third Nadal proved too strong.
World number four Andy Murray beat Italian baseliner Andreas Seppi 7-6, 7-5 in the second round. Murray next meets Marc Gicquel, who came into the tournament after the withdrawal of Robin Soderling.
Gicquel reached the last eight by defeating fellow Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-3.
Croatian Mario Ancic avenged his third-round defeat at the Australian Open by eliminating fourth-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal with Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. Michael Llodra was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils.
Serena, Jankovic advance
In Paris, top-ranked Serena Williams showed no sign of the illness which kept her bedridden last week as she brushed aside Karolina Sprem 6-1, 6-2 to reach the Open GDF Suez quarterfinals on Thursday.
Next up will be French qualifier Emilie Loit. Also joining Serena in the last eight were Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva, Alize Cornet, and Amelie Mauresmo.
Jankovic overcame Li Na of China 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 for the first time in five hard-court matches.
Dementieva beat her Russian compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-4, 6-2. She meets Nathalie Dechy, who beat Swiss Patty Schnyder 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Cornet rallied past Daniela Hantuchova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Eighth-seeded Mauresmo routed Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-1, 6-2. The French star faces fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarters.
Zvonareva sails thru
In Thailand, top-seeded Vera Zvonareva overpowered Yaroslava Shedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the WTA's Pattaya Open quarterfinals. Caroline Wozniacki was stretched by Australian Open junior champion Ksenia Pervak before advancing to the quarterfinals 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 3-0
In other matches, sixth seeded Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn beat Portugal's Neuza Silva 6-3, 6-2, seventh seed Shahar Peer of Israel defeated Ukraine's Yuliya Beygelzimer 6-4, 6-1, Sania Mirza of India dominated Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko 6-4, 6-0, and Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova defeated Croatia's Ivana Lisjak 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Blake rolls past Spadea
In California, third seed James Blake opened his San Jose Open campaign in style, handing a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to fellow American Vince Spadea on Wednesday.
Sixth-seeded Sam Querrey knocked off Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (5).
Argentine second seed Juan Martin del Potro beat Italian Andrea Stoppini 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) while American Josh Isner defeated Ramon Delgado 7-6 (9), 6-4. In second round action, German Tommy Haas advanced against Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-2, 7-5.
Almagro, Robredo thru
Defending champion Nicolas Almagro reached the Brazil Open quarterfinals for a fourth straight year by beating Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.
Almagro led four Spaniards into the last eight, including second-seeded Tommy Robredo.
In the quarterfinals Almegro will meet Frederico Gil of Portugal, who upset fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Robredo eased past Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal with countryman Alberto Martin, who ousted seventh-seeded Nicolas Devilder of France 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero breezed past Brian Dabul of Argentina 6-1, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Jose Acasuso of Argentina beat Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-3, 6-2 and will meet compatriot Eduardo Schwank, who beat Portuguese qualifier Rui Machado 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7
