Effat University plans post-graduate classes in several majors starting next academic year. At a press conference here, Dr. Haifa Jamal Al-Layl, Dean of the university, spelled out various future plans of the university. “A first of its kind research center will be established in collaboration with King Fahd University for Petroleum and Minerals very soon,” she said. Established in 1999, Effat is the first private institution of higher education for women in the Kingdom. The college was upgraded to university status on Jan. 29. Princess Loulwa Al-Faisal, General Supervisor of the university, said the institution started as a college with only 37 students in its first year. It is now a university with several hundred undergraduate students enrolled in eight degree programs. “After ten years of determination and dedication, our academic achievements have been duly recognized with university status. The elevation serves as a testimony of the enlightened vision of its founders,” Princess Loulwa said. The degree programs are in architecture, business administration, computer science, early childhood education, electrical and computer engineering, English and translation, information systems and psychology, within the three colleges, namely, College of Engineering, College of Business and College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Two of these programs – architecture and electrical and computer engineering have not previously been offered to females in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Al-Layl said that since its establishment the university has committed itself to inspiring young women to become leaders by striving for academic excellence, professional distinction and personal development. Operating under the umbrella of King Faisal's Non-Profit Charitable Organization, Effat University is strengthened by the legacy of its founder, Queen Effat Al-Thunayyan. Queen Effat and King Faisal were instrumental in the development of education in Saudi Arabia beginning with the establishment of Dar Al-Hanan School for Girls in 1955. Their legacy continues into the 21st century through the commitment of their sons and daughters who serve on the Effat College Board of Trustees.
