Residents of eastern Jeddah are complaining of leakage from the concrete dam built around the infamous Misk Lake, a sewage dumping area located in northeast Briman. The sewage lake water level has risen after the heavy rains that lashed Jeddah Friday, residents said. Pools of water have formed on the other side of the dam because of the seepage. Abdullah Al-Maliki, who lives 700 meters from the concrete dam, said the recurrent leakage poses health hazard to the residents of the area. He questioned the effectiveness of the projects announced by the Mayoralty to check the leakage from the lake. Khalid Al-Zahrani, owner of a yard near the dam, said the efforts of the Mayoralty to pump out water and stop tankers from unloading the sewage into the lake were not effective as water level continued to rise. A Mayoralty official said the water level did not rise because of the rains, but because of the rising groundwater level in the area. He said a Dutch company was given the contract to study the problem. King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques last July allocated SR95 million to solve the problem.
