Authorities have ordered a six-month ban on catching shrimps during their breeding period. The ban was effective as of Feb. 1 and will continue till July 30. According to the order, shrimp boats cannot venture into the sea during the ban period. Coast Guard authorities will keep a tight watch on the Kingdom's waters to ensure that the restrictions are not violated by fishermen and boat owners. Shrimp boats are different from normal fishing boats. These vessels are out to sea for six or seven days and use special nets and methods to catch shrimps. They employ the bottom trawling technique, and use shrimp nets with chains and weights in order to catch shrimps at the bottom of the ocean. According to recent studies, the Kingdom's waters have many varieties of shrimps, with species varying in accordance with the level of salt, the kind of seabed soil, and the availability of food. The Kingdom's bays and coastal areas are perfect breeding grounds for shrimps.
