The Philippine military says communist guerrillas shot and killed a town police chief and two of his men in southern Davao del Sur province. It was the latest in a string of rebel attacks. Military spokesman Maj. Randolph Cabangbang says the New People's Army ambushed Senior Inspector Remelex Mabalot's vehicle Monday as he was en route to investigate a killing in Bansalan township. The group, which has been fighting for 40 years to establish a communist state, has guerrillas in nearly all parts of the Philippines. The rebels have recently stepped up raids, taking several police hostage. Peace talks brokered by Norway stalled in 2004 when the rebels accused the Philippine government of persuading the U.S. to add them to a list of terrorist organizations.
