20 cm (eight inches) of snow blankets the 1,737-meter (5,700-foot) Jees Mountain in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah on Sunday, with temperatures falling to -3°C. The chilly weather is a rarity for the desert country where summer temperatures reach 50°C. “Although limited snowfall was recorded on the mountain some years back, for the first time the peak of the mountain was fully covered in snow,” the state news agency WAM said. Al-Jees mountain is 25 km (15 miles) northeast of Ras Al-Khaimah city. Snow reportedly covered an area of five square kilometres (almost two square miles) of the mountain. Abu Dhabi and Dubai also had heavy rains on Friday and Saturday in a spell of rare chilly weather.
