A firefighter made his way through a burning house to save a 2-year-old girl Thursday in Al-Tuwal in the Jizan region, authorities said. The girl was rushed to hospital and she is now in stable condition. A fire started in a room adjacent to the girl's room on the second floor while the family was sitting in the living room on the same floor. The family battled the blaze, but the thick smoke prevented them from reaching the child. Heavy smoke and fire greeted firefighters from the room adjacent to the girl's room when they arrived. “The firefighters did a tremendous job saving the girl and putting out the fire in the room within a few minutes,” said one family member. The smoke was sucked out of the room by smoke exhausts from motor vehicles. Only one room was gutted and covered in soot and no one was hurt, said Lt. Yahya Al-Qahtani, spokesman of the Civil Defense Department in Jizan. Fire investigators Thursday sifted through the ruins in search of the fire's origin, but it is not yet clear what caused the fire to start, he said.
