The Second International Scientific Forum on Orthopedic Surgery will begin on Jan. 10 at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), said Dr. Adnan Al-Mazroua, the dean of the College of Medicine. Stressing the importance of holding such a forum, Dr. Mazroua said that for the first time, there will be a live demonstration of surgery at the forum using the new digital operation rooms in the university hospital. Organized under the patronage of Prince Misha'l Bin Majid Bin Abdul Aziz, Governor of Jeddah, the forum will also be attended by Prince Faisal Bin Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Saudi Society of Orthopedic Surgery. Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr. Mazroua said the forum will consider 85 research papers from 30 countries including Arab nations. He said it will also discuss some important subjects, such as, orthopedic surgery for children, sports injuries, artificial joints, injury medicine, bone tumors and spinal column surgery. Dr. Mazroua said the College of Medicine in the university will establish a new research center for orthopedic surgery. “The center aims to develop studies related to orthopedic diseases in conformity with basic standards of scientific research,” he said. The university hospital, he said, has conducted more than 8,900 surgical operations and “receives over 500 cases daily in the emergency section.” Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mohammed Al-Sayyad, instructor of orthopedic, joints and spinal column surgery, said that a new device to lengthen bones called the ‘Spinal Nail' will be discussed in the forum. King Abdulaziz University is the only establishment that has the right to use this device in the Middle East. Dr. Sayyad, who is also the president of the forum and the scientific committee that organized the forum, said: “The Spinal Nail is a recent innovation in the world of medical technology for the lengthening of bones by remote control.”
