British luxury carmaker Bentley Motors has unveiled some of the features of its ultraluxury SUV, and it beats the Tesla Motors Inc. upcoming Model X in at least one way. The Bentayga has a top speed of 187 miles an hour and will be the fastest SUV around. The Model X's top speed is 155 mph. The Bentley, however, will reach 60 mph in four seconds, while the Tesla TSLA, -0.17% Model X will get there faster at 3.8 seconds. Bentley has said it got inspiration for the name from the forested ecosystem known as taiga, and for a mountain peak in the Canary Islands also called Bentayga. “We searched ... for a symbol of nature's power and beauty,” the company said. Bentley, a name mostly associated with royal cars, is a subsidiary of Germany's Volkswagen AG. VOW, -1.19% which also owns luxury brands such as Audi and Porsche. Half an hour on the road demonstrates that the Bentayga's ability to tackle corners – combined with 600bhp of shove from a heavily revised version of Bentley's 6.0-litre W12 engine, and that opulent interior – already puts this development car high on the list of ultimate cross-continental missiles. So far, so Bentley. Then we turn off the tarmac and onto the dirt – a surface well out of Bentley's traditional comfort zone. Until now. — SG
