The author of "70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" (Aug. 19) needs to do some more research on the Japanese during World War Two. Before the bombs were dropped, there was no indication that Japan would surrender. The invasion of Japan would have resulted in the death of millions of Japanese while they defended their country, not to mention the complete destruction of Japan. Whether you want to believe it or not, the dropping of the bombs ultimately saved lives and preserved Japan. The US warned the Japanese before they dropped the bombs, unlike the Japanese when they bombed Pearl Harbor. Mark, Online response I thank Dr. Al-Ghamdi for his attention to the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 70 years ago. I was really surprised to find that a Saudi brother understood the story of the use of the first (and hopefully the last) nuclear weapon. Koji Abdulaziz Saishu, Japan, Online response
