SAN FRANCISCO — It was bad enough a reeling Washington Nationals team had to face San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner Sunday. To have to deal with him at the plate as well proved to be overkill. Bumgarner contributed a double and a home run to his 14th victory of the season, hitting and pitching the Giants to a 5-0 win over the Nationals that completed a four-game sweep. “He did it all,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “That's an impressive outing with how hot it was. That game is right up there with the best he's thrown, (and) he's thrown a lot of them.” The loss dropped the Nationals (58-59) under .500 for the first time since May 6. Washington has lost 20 of their last 29 games. Bumgarner (14-6) dominated the Nationals on the mound, shutting them out on three hits, walked one and struck out a career-best-tying struck out 14. Braves 2, Diamondbacks 1 (10 innings): The Atlanta Braves got a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks when Cameron Maybin homered leading off the 10th inning. Shelby Miller, who did not allow a hit until the eighth inning, got a no-decision despite a two-hit effort with 10 strikeouts and now has gone 16 starts without a victory. Pirates 8, Mets 1: Third baseman Aramis Ramirez had four hits, including an RBI single during a four-run seventh inning that helped the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-1 win over the New York Mets. The Pirates (69-46) extended their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild card standings to 1-1/2 games. New York's lead over the Washington Nationals in the National League East fell to four games. Ramirez finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Brewers 6, Phillies 1: Ryan Braun's grand slam highlighted a five-RBI performance while rookie Taylor Jungmann continued his strong debut season with nine strikeouts in 6-1/3 innings as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies. Braun connected off Phillies starter Aaron Harang on a 1-1 pitch to cap a five-run fifth inning. Jungmann improved to 7-4 and lowered his ERA to 2.23. Marlins 6, Cardinals 4: A botched double play ball by second baseman Kolten Wong led to four unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning that put Miami ahead in their victory over St. Louis. Other results: Dodgers 2, Reds 1; Rockies 5, Padres 0. American League Blue Jays 3, Yankees 1: Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer while Drew Hutchison pitched into the seventh inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays (65-54) moved back to within 1/2 a game of the first-place Yankees (64-52) in the American League East. Hutchison (12-2) allowed three hits, one walk and one run in 6-2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five. The only run Hutchison allowed came on a home run by Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury in the sixth. Orioles 18, Athletics 2: Baltimore's Gerardo Parra tied a career-high with five hits, including a home run and three RBIs, as the Orioles pounded the Oakland Athletics. Center fielder Adam Jones also had two homers for Baltimore. Baltimore left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (7-6) allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over six innings. Twins 4, Indians 1: Minnesota Twins left-hander Tommy Milone picked up his first victory in more than a month as the Twins beat the Cleveland Indians. Catcher Kurt Suzuki drove in two runs. Twins closer Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his league-leading 31st save of the season. Astros 6, Tigers 5: Second baseman Jose Altuve drilled the first pitch from reliever Alex Wilson into center field to deliver the Houston Astros a 6-5 walk-off win over the Detroit Tigers. Other results: Rangers 5, Rays 3; Mariners 10, Red Sox 8 (12 innings); Royals 4, Angels 3 (10 innings). Inter-League White Sox 3, Cubs 1: Chris Sale threw seven scoreless innings and tied a career high with 15 strikeouts to lead the Chicago White Sox in a dominant pitching performance against the Chicago Cubs. — Agencies
