SHENZHEN, China — Philippe Mexes scored the only goal an hour in as AC Milan beat Inter Milan in a friendly at Longgang Stadium Saturday.

Mexes' spectacular right-footed volley from outside the box off a corner kick by Giacomo Bonaventura found the top left corner.

AC Milan and Inter are playing in the inaugural Chinese zone of the International Champions Cup. Real Madrid faces Inter in Guangzhou Monday.

Villarreal makes winning start

Spanish side Villarreal kicked off the Emirates Cup with a 2-1 win over Bundesliga runner-up Wolfsburg Saturday.

Marcelino Garcia Toral's team made a flying start in the opening match of the four-team pre-season tournament thanks to first-half goals from Mario Gaspar and Matias Nahuel Leiva at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Dieter Hecking's Wolfsburg's goal was scored by Croatia winger Ivan Perisic. — Agencies
