CHICAGO — Jeff Francoeur snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the 10th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 in National League Friday.

The victory was the second straight for Philadelphia (35-63) and sixth in seven games. The Cubs (51-44) have now lost two of their last three.

Dodgers 7, Mets 2: Left-hander Ian Thomas and four relievers combined on a six-hitter and the Los Angeles Dodgers scored most of their runs in the first three innings of a 7-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday.

Thomas (1-1) became the 13th different starting pitcher used by Los Angeles this season. In his first career start, he allowed one run and three hits in five innings.

Pirates 7, Nationals 5: Gregory Polanco had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs while Pedro Alvarez and Neil Walker also homered to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday.

Walker, rookie Kang Jung-ho and catcher Francisco Cervelli had two hits each for the Pirates, who had 12 hits in the game.

Cardinals 4, Braves 2: Randal Grichuk homered and rookie Tim Cooney threw seven solid innings to earn his first major league win, leading St. Louis to a victory over Atlanta.

St. Louis improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break and pushed its home record to an MLB-best 35-12. Meanwhile, the Braves have lost their last six road games.

Other results: Rockies 6, Reds 5; Brewers 2, Diamondbacks 1; Padres 3, Marlins 1.

American League

White Sox 6, Indians 0: Melky Cabrera and Alexei Ramirez combined for five hits, including three doubles and two RBIs, and left-hander Jose Quintana pitched his first career complete game and first shutout as the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 6-0 Friday at Progressive Field.
Chicago has won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 14-1.

Rays 3, Orioles 1: The Tampa Bay Rays, held to two hits for seven innings, rallied for three runs in the eighth, with rookie shortstop Tim Beckham getting a two-out, two-run single to hand the Baltimore Orioles a 3-1 loss on Friday at Tropicana Field.

The Rays (49-49) got back to .500 in their first home game since the All Star break, helped by a strong outing by starter Chris Archer, who struck out nine batters in six innings of one-run ball.

Astros 4, Royals 0: Left-hander Scott Kazmir won his first start for Houston and left fielder Preston Tucker went 3-for-5 with a home run as the Astros topped the Kansas City Royals 4-0 on Friday.

Kazmir limited the Royals to three hits over seven innings. The Astros acquired him on Thursday from the Oakland Athletics for minor-leaguers Daniel Mengden and Jacob Nottingham.

Kazmir (6-5) has allowed one earned run in 26 1/3 innings over four starts in July. He threw 60 strikes in 91 pitches.

Red Sox 2, Tigers 1 (11 innings): The reeling Boston Red Sox, returning from a historic 0-7 road trip, snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 2-1, 11-inning decision over the fading Detroit Tigers on Friday.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts singled home the winning run as the last-place Red Sox, who have scored 21 runs in the last nine games, won for the first time since the All Star break and opened a 10-game homestand on a positive note.

Other results: Rangers 4, Angels 2; Twins 10, Yankees 1.

Inter-League

Giants 9, Athletics 3: Hunter Pence had four hits and drove in two runs, Brandon Belt had three RBIs and San Francisco won its third straight, beating Oakland.

Jake Peavy (2-4) pitched six strong innings to earn his second straight victory. Buster Posey extended his hitting streak to 10 games with three hits and drove in a run, and Joe Panik and Angel Pagan each also drove in runs for the Giants, who won their ninth in 10 games. — Agencies
