FOR those of you wondering what it means, daughters would agree — Moja Majka, which means ‘My Mother' in Montenegrin, represents the most beautiful and fulfilling relationship they want to be in. The bond that has stood every test of time and one that will always be the most cherished one for daughters. The brand is, you guessed it, run by a mother and her daughter. “I am the daughter of Moja Majka aka my mother Thurayya Basaad — the creative director and designer as well. My mother and I are a team and we tend to spilt tasks between us,” Sarah Basaad, co-founder of Saudi designer brand Moja Majka told Saudi Gazette. As the month of Ramadan resonates with mercy and peace, during this month we tend to disconnect from the mundane routine and find solitude in prayer. This time also marks the beginning of a new life and helps most take a holistic approach to life. For Sarah it did just that, by influencing what she does best. The ‘Solitude' Ramadan collection embodies a stunning demonstration of subtle love and intricacy. To Sarah, solitude means remoteness and isolation. Perhaps what Ramadan echoes. “We were inspired by what this holy month represents. So we focused on hidden details rather than the big picture, and what this kaftan makes you feel — isolated from the norm of our industry and repetition.” The collection personifies the spirit of the brand and especially the designers. Thurayya poured her incessant love and soul into it with Sarah's effortless style and passion. The collection uses soft colors with subtle embroidery and other motifs keeping it classy and elegant. The simplicity of design is a conscious decision made by the duo for you to wear it like a kaftan and an abaya. But what really is the biggest selling point is that no two abayas are the same. No matter which abaya you buy, it will be the only one in that design. Every piece is unique and each tells a story. Their previous palm leaves collection used the block printing technique against contrasting shades. It also used playful colors to make each kaftan unique with embroidered palm leaves. “It was ‘no bad days' themed, in which we used traditional block prints and printed palm trees as it signifies good, it also signifies wisdom, for wisdom is of good. We kept it simple but gave more Importance to the details, embroidery and organic fabrics,” she added. Moja Majka is a lifestyle brand. It is far from following trends or being one. However, being an enigma can prove otherwise. Now spotted at every big event in town, whether they like it or not, it is definitely a trend. “Well also with a lot of imitations recently, we feel like it could make us a trend. But Moja Majka is anything but trendy,” she explained. “We use antique pieces and fabrics that keep it timeless. We keep our cuts basic, so they're not outdated if you decide to wear your kaftan 10 years from now.” In their latest Solitude campaign, we also saw men wearing the kaftans. Could this be a trend? Is it so good that men want in? We asked her if this is where the brand is headed. “Perhaps it is! We had a few male clients in the beginning, and they keep growing.” So no matter who you are or where, “you must have a Moja Majka kaftan.” Sarah reasoned it is not only an abaya but a multiuse kaftan and outerwear that could be worn outside of the country or at the beach depending on your sense of style. Considering her style is boho-chic, she suggests you pair a MM kaftan, with shorts and a pair of gladiators for the perfect look. There certainly has been nothing close to the mother-daughter creations, in a long time. If you met them, you would know why. For now, meet their collection at The Store, on Tahliya Street in Jeddah.
