FATULLAH, Bangladesh — Heavy rain forced the second day's play to be abandoned without a ball being bowled in the one-off Test between Bangladesh and India in Fatullah Thursday. Umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Nigel Llong called off play at 1.40 pm (0740 GMT) after incessant rain since early morning left the outfield and the covers water-logged at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
Just 56 of the stipulated 90 overs were bowled on the first day due to bad weather, with India making 239 for no loss after it won the toss and elected to bat.
Shikhar Dhawan was unbeaten on 150 and Murali Vijay was on 89. More rain has been forecast for the next three days, raising fears of the match ending in a draw.
India and Bangladesh are due to play three One-Day Internationals in Dhaka following the Test.
Prior retires
Former England wicketkeeper Matt Prior announced Thursday that he has retired at the age of 33 due to injury.
Prior made the last of his 79 Test appearances against India at Lord's 11 months ago before undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon.
He had hoped to return to action with Sussex in this season's County Championship, but having failed to recover full fitness, he has decided to walk away.
“Today is a very sad day for me, as I am forced to announce my retirement from the game I love,” Prior said in a statement. “I had been hoping and expecting to be fit for the start of the 2015 season. Unfortunately, this has proved impossible, and I have now had to reach this decision.”
Sri Lanka has recalled batsman Jehan Mubarak after an absence of nearly eight years, and aggressive one-day specialist Kusal Perera has also been named in a 16-man squad for next week's opener of a three-Test series against Pakistan.
Mubarak played his last Test for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in 2007 and has played limited overs cricket occasionally for his country.
He averages only 15 in 10 Test appearances but fills the need for experience in the middle order after the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene. The 34-year-old Mubarak has played 168 first class matches and scored more than 10,000 runs.
Perera's inclusion is backed by good performance in the recent home series against Pakistan A, which included two centuries and a half-century.
Young fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera, who had not played a Test but appeared in a couple of One-Day Internationals for Sri Lanka, has also been named.
Led by Angelo Mathews the squad had nine specialist batsmen.
Experienced Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Tharindu Kaushal are the three spin bowlers. Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep and Dhammika Prasad are the specialist fast bowlers, while Suranga Lakmal's inclusion is subject to fitness.
The first Test will begin in Galle next Wednesday.
